About Fluorescent Bulbs

There is the old question about turning the light on or off and simply put turn it off when you leave a room whether it is a fluorescent or incandescent bulb. This is especially true if still using incandescent bulbs as they use double what the fluorescent do.

The CFL light bulb uses half the amount of energy while emitting the same amount of light as an incandescent. The way it works is that a 60 watt incandescent light bulb produces 1150 Lumen, which is the term used for light output. Then there is the CFL bulb which uses only 30 watts while producing the same amount of light but using less energy.

Another benefit is that the CFL not only saves you money energy wise but also the fact that it lasts up to five years with normal use saving you money versus the average 4-6 month life span of a regular bulb.

Some people wonder, since CFL lights take a few minutes to light fully, if when leaving a room they should turn the light off or leave it on. The answer is to turn it off since there is no reason to waste energy if no one is in the room. The energy it uses to turn on is minimal in comparison. You may intend to return right away but many times you get detoured elsewhere and then the light is left burning for no reason.

An example of this that you maybe can relate to is you are doing laundry and have the light on and you leave for a moment to answer the phone. Thinking you'll be gone for a minute you leave the light on. Instead you end up gabbing for an hour or start doing other things and in the meantime the light in the laundry has been burning away, wasting energy, with no one in the room.

This is an example of wasted energy that maybe was not planned but happens which is why it's best to turn the light off and pay special attention to ones used less frequently such as basements and garages where you may not return till the next day or longer.

If you are accustomed to turning off lights when leaving a room then good for you! Keep up the good habit and if you are not then try getting into it. For a fast run to the bathroom, it is alright, but all other times it is best to save energy and turn the light off. You might be surprised to save five to ten dollars on your electric bill each month by doing so depending on individual usage.

If you go online there are several websites that can give you many tips to save energy besides turning off lights when not in a room. They have information on upgrading your lighting system to save energy and money plus getting a household energy audit is another. You can learn more on CFL lighting and the way it works and how much money and energy can be saved in the long run.
